Glasgow - East End - 30/08/2008

A walk from the city to the Great Eastern returning via the Necropolis. Armed only with a camera phone and rushing around fuelled by coffee, sleeplessness and strong painkillers, these pictures have no artistic merit. It's interesting to note how badly my otherwise good quality Nokia N95 camera copes with Glasgow's characteristic silvery skies.

Glasgow - Rottenrow - 15/10/2008

A fleeting visit to Glasgow, and a long-standing mission to explore the area surrounding the former Maternity Hospital. Again, these are 'phone camera pictures designed to record a walk and not necessarily to produce great art.

Glasgow - Saracen, West End & Queens Park - 07/02/2009

A day free to wander Glasgow - by bus, train and on foot. Starting from familiar and safe haunts I headed into the frozen northern suburbs, then west before heading briefly south of the Clyde. It would have felt both disrespectful and unsafe to tote my camera, so these are iPhone pictures of variable quality. A record of a strange and interesting day.

Glasgow - Southern Necropolis- 03/10/2009

An unexpected trip to Glasgow, and a bus journey into the Gorbals to get away from the rain. Sometimes, not knowing quite where you're going is all part of the fun. For a little while, the sky cleared and the cemetery was bathed in brief autumn sun. Soon after, the furious wind stirred up the leaves and I headed for the next bus back to Town.

Glasgow Green - 20/11/2010

An unexpected day in Glasgow in November. The anticipated rain didn't appear, so I walked out east to Glasgow Green for the first time in years. Grabbed some quick pictures under silvery skies, before returning to the busy city centre.

Glasgow - Wellpark and The Necropolis - 06/10/2011

A dry, sunny but windy day and a read of Geoff Holder's "Mysterious Glasgow" coaxed me out to a few old haunts around the Cathedral, along with a new one in the form of the Lady Well in its odd, cul-de-sac near the brewery.

Glasgow - Botanic Gardens & Kelvinbridge - 16/02/2012

Lured west by the wish to finally find an abandoned station, and to explore the area where the railway met the River Kelvin.

London Weekends - Oct to Dec 2008

I make no secret of my love of wandering in London, and it's one of the few areas of my being where I let just a hint of superstition and unreason wander into my otherwise fairly sensible existence! Over the course of the last few months of 2008 I found myself in the Capital rather often, partly by the necessity of travelling that way, and partly by design. Rather like the Glasgow albums, these will vary from fairly good quality shots to 'phone camera snaps - especially where the locations were not places to be found loitering with cameras on show.

London Weekends - Mar 2009

More shaky, low quality camera photographs stolen at odd moments wandering around the capital. These shots currently focus on wanders in the London Borough of Hackney.

East End Churches

A walk taken in 2003 around some of Hawksmoor's ubiquitous London churches.

Abney Park Cemetery - August 2010

An unexpected wander around one of the 'Magnificent Seven' 19th century London cemeteries, reserved for the burial of dissenters and non-conformists. The haphazard landscapes are well-used by locals and visitors, and it's difficult to feel gloomy in such a splendid bit of parkland within the city.

London Weekends - July-August 2010

Some mainly Eastern wanderings from the summer, ostensibly spent travelling on the revitalised East London Railway and walking from Hackney Wick towards the city.

Last Pre-Olympic Walk - 26/05/2012

I've ended up in London a lot this last few months, and have often thought about a last walk around the Olympic Park before all hell breaks loose and the circus begins. With the aid of a route suggested by the London Topographical Society, I finally took the trip. This bit of the former wilderness will never be quite the same again...

Moselle Walk - 30/06/2012

A walk from Hornsey, via the New River and Lordship Lane to Tottenham Cemetary, tracing the Moselle River. Later, a brief skirting of the Olympic Park too.

Hackney Wick Walk - 18/08/2012

Part of a circumambulation of the Olympic Park on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year. The eerie abandonment of the park fits strangely well with the quiet waterways which surround it. The security guards though, continue to perform their role with a degree of relish.

Limehouse Cut Walk - 02/09/2012

Stuck in South Yorkshire by way a cancelled railtour, I found myself on a desperate dash to London. It was the middle of the Paralympics and I had no clear idea what to do. Once again I felt the pull of the inland waterways...

Regents Canal - Islington to Hackney - 08/09/2012

Completing the eastern act of the canal with this walk through some of the most gentrified and most squalid bits of the canal. It was a walk of contrasts, on a busy summer afternoon.

Lea Valley - Bow to Tottenham - 15/09/2012

This started out as a plan to re-walk the Hackney Cut towpath to celebrate its post-Olympic reopening. In the event, it became a tramp north in surprisingly good weather as far as Tottenham Lock.

Places - 2009

A collection of pictures which don't belong anywhere else, taken in 2009. These will often be taken shakily on a mobile phone camera, when I'm too nervous or too lazy to get my camera out. Or maybe they will just be chance captures of strange moments.

The A3033 - A Forgotten Road?

One miserable day in November 2003, I decided to take some pictures along the route of the A3033, a route which used to begin right outside my front door. Since the new road from the M5 to Weston-super-Mare much has changed, and with it went some fine pre-Worboys signage. These old signs were practically the only mention of this short (approx 1.2 mile) road in Weston.

The A3033 began life as the B3127 (at least, this is it's designation in my 1962 Geographer's Atlas). The A3033 used to begin on the A370 where Locking Road met Ashcombe Road, and provided a shortcut across Weston, or a route to the seafront avoiding the Town Centre. However, when the A370 was downgraded to the B3440 and the new D2 A370 from M5 Junction 21 to Weston was opened, all that changed...

Edinburgh - Greyfriars Kirk - 15/02/2012

I'd always resisted the tourist trail around Edinburgh, but with wonderful weather and time to spend I decided to chase myths and legends into this curious, quiet backwater of the city...
